The Department of Urology manages disorders of the male and female urinary tracts and male reproductive organs. Is kidney failure a permanent condition?
Yes, if it’s a chronic condition (old, more than three months’ duration). However, if it’s a new problem (acute), there is a 50% chance of recovery with proper treatment.
Will dialysis cure my kidney disease?
Dialysis does not cure kidney disease. It simply undertakes the work of the kidneys.
How long do haemodialysis sessions last?
Regular haemodialysis session lasts for 4 hours, done twice or thrice a week. One needs to continue dialysis lifelong or till one has a kidney transplant done.
Do I have to get admitted to the hospital for peritoneal dialysis?
In the beginning, yes, for insertion of peritoneal dialysis catheter and for 3-4 days’ training. After that, it is done at home. Later, you may need to visit the hospital for regular check-ups once in two or three months.
